The Hipodromo

One of the most popular attractions on the Costa del Sol is the Hipodromo (racecourse). Located in close proximity to the towns of Mijas and Fuengirola and just off the N340 highway, the Hipodromo is a very entertaining activity for families, young and old. Events may run non-stop for several days. Evidently, the course is so significant and popular that all the races are televised live on local television.

Often, the event is opened by vibrant, colorful dances and other cultural performances which repeat throughout each day. Almost everywhere you turn, you can find a musical band or a colorful national costume of some participant nation. Imagine being in China in one minute and a few steps further, you find yourself in Ireland, Madrid or Columbia! One particularly fascinating thing during these racecourse events is its magically combining nations, peoples and cultures -- in the streets you could see different cultures mixing, and diverse peoples mingling and enjoying the event together. National dancers of one culture may be dancing to the beat of another nation’s band. As well, with the presence of the various nation participants, it is possible to sample the cuisine of these countries and Spanish regions. Indeed, only in the Hipodromo will you witness such a diverse and fascinating show of culture, with all its bright multi colors and themes. Your experience at the Hipodromo will surely be memorable and entertaining, in a very unique way.

The racecourse, most of which is new, is impressively well developed and organized, featuring two sand tracks of 1,700 meters and 1,600 meters and 25 meters wide each. There is also an athletics track plus a 30,000m2 plaza capable of seating 2,000 and providing a direct view of the track. Moreover, a new grandstand is being erected for an additional 3,000 spectators.

The racecourse also includes competition and training tracks, gymnasium, paddocks and a swimming pool. To cater to your needs, there’s also a hotel and a selection of bars and restaurants. If you’re bringing along your pets, there is an exclusive pet hotel that will take care of your furry favorites during your stay. Entrance is free of charge, as well as the ample car parking. When you arrive, make sure you get a brochure at the entrance gate. Latecomers usually are not able to grab a copy anymore. Programs and brochures are available in both English and Spanish, and hence no worries about understanding the events and grasping the techniques of betting. The staff at the information desks speak English and are very courteous.

Betting at the course is surprisingly uncomplicated - your basic options are of course, betting on the winner of the race, or gambling on the horse that finishes 1st or 2nd. Races are normally held on occasional Sundays. However, during the summer, typical peak season of the tourism industry, the racecourse events are more frequent and the entire place usually is saturated with bright lights until late night.

The ambience at the Hipodromo is surprisingly relaxing, in fact, it has a certain family air to it. It makes a wonderful day out for the entire family, kids and parents alike; yes, despite the fact that many people are very passionate over the races and dedicate their lives to the sport, sometimes to the point of fanaticism. Conversely, you are not obliged to bet if you don't want to. Being a simple spectator will certainly not make you feel out of place. By the way, the food is quite costly, but feel free to bring your own food and drinks if you wish to save money.
