There are many places to visit in Fuengirola, and a good many things to do while vacationing there. Foremost among these, of course, are the beaches. Beaches, beaches, and more beaches. Fuengirola’s coastline is nothing but 6 miles of fantastic sand and sea, bordered by high rise luxury hotels and residential apartment blocks that all offer magnificent views of the surrounding Mediterranean. The beaches (Carvajal, Gaviotas, Boliches, San Francisco, Santa Amalia, Castillo) all feature newly built “chiringuitos,” beachside sheds over restaurants that feature traditional dishes.
Fuengirola is also home to one of the modern zoos of the world, the Zoologico de Fuengirola (“Fuengirola Zoo”). The Zoologico specializes in breeding endangered species and chimpanzee research.
Definitely not your typical everyday zoo, the Zoologico has transformed from an old fashioned zoo cramped with cages and animals into an impressive zoo-themepark. The Zoologico is modeled after a lush tropical forest, showcasing endangered species in their natural setting. Visitors to the zoo would see various animals in various environs: crocodiles basking on sandy shores of the river Nile, rare Sumatra tigers stretched out on a temple façade reminiscent of the Angkor Wat, lemurs playing from baobab trees, and bats flying from abandoned mines. One of the best attractions of the zoo is the “moonlight visit.” This takes place at night, in the July to August months. Artificial moonlight is used on the zoo area and visitors are treated to views of the more nocturnally active species in the zoo.
Next to the Zoologico is the one and only square shaped bullring in Spain, the Plaza de Toros. Here visitors get to see bullfights, one of Spain’s native attractions.
Renovated from their original state, the Roman baths, ancient holdovers from the past, can be visited at Torreblanca. The Arab castle Suhayl from ancient Suel is also open to visitors.
