Popular traditions in the Benalmádena bring vibrant color and life to the town. By observing the local festivities, visitors can immerse themselves in the Andalucian culture.
In April, Semana Santa (“Holy Week”) takes place. This is a special time in Benalmádena, marked with the usual religious processions through Benalmádena Pueblo and Arroyo de la Miel. In the old Benalmádena Pueblo, there is also a live dramatization of the Passion of the Christ. Semana Santa is one of the most traditional celebrations observed.
In June, the Corpus Christi is held beginning on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. This is the Catholic feast commemorating the presence of the body of Christ in the Eucharistic host. The celebration begins with a solemn procession parading the consecrated host, through the streets that have been strewn with sweet smelling cypress branches and flowers.
Also in the month of June, on the 24th, the area of Arroyo de la Miel holds an annual local fair, lasting until the 29th. This is a local favorite because it signals the start of warmer nights on and around the coastal area. The fair is a popular fiesta, with bonfires and fireworks starting on the midnight of the 23rd.
In July, the “Veladilla del Carmen” takes place on the 16th. This is an evening procession of the Virgin Carmen down to the sea. It has become more than a simple procession observed by the seafaring folk, to something of a local tradition. A special mass is held and the statue of the virgin is carried to the sea, where the procession continues aboard brightly festooned boats. After the virgin goes out to sea, there is a huge fireworks display right on the beach.
Come August, another festival, this time dedicated to the Virgen de la Cruz (“Virgin of the Cross”) takes place in Benalmádena Pueblo. This is another very important local tradition.
